During the recent elections, education was spearheaded by several political parties. Good education is important, we at Poelmann van den Broek agree. We are closely involved in it and we know the practice because we advise and assist various schools. From that perspective, I would like to update you on the Excellent School designation.

Since 2012, schools can receive this designation. The goal is to recognize and appreciate more schools that stand out from other good schools in a specific area. Schools can apply themselves to be considered for the predicate. And this is happening more and more: in 2015 and 2016 already more than 280 schools.

Added value for schools

That more and more schools are participating in the Excellent Schools program is not surprising. Schools that have received the predicate for three years find that it attracts students. At the same time, the predicate is a recognition and appreciation of their achievements. But much more importantly, the predicate has a positive effect on the school and the team. It challenges them to continually review and develop their teaching and methods. This benefits the students.

The best school for every type of child?

On the other hand, one can ask: is it justified that students are more likely to apply to a school thanks to this designation? Despite the fact that the judgment Excellent School is given by an independent jury, this does not mean that it is the best school for every type of child. This is because the predicate only says something about the specific area in which a school excels. It remains important to also look at the other facilities a school has to offer. Does the education match the child's interests? Is it possible to choose practical subjects? How far does the school go in providing customization? Does a comprehensive school better suit the student or rather a school that only offers VMBO, HAVO or VWO?

Stay critical in school choice

So it is wise to be critical when choosing a school. Don't let the Excellent School designation be leading in itself. Schools can be excellent in many different ways. The main advantage of the predicate is that you can see where a school stands out. For example, an innovative educational offering in the area of technology or creativity. Or a recognized approach to students who need extra guidance.

In addition to the above, there are many different issues in education that involve a variety of areas of law. For example, supervision, financing issues, but also labor law and liability. Do you need a sparring partner who is at home in this complex world? Let us know!
