Poelmann van den Broek is known as a committed employer, where there is room for development and attorneys share their knowledge among themselves as sparring partners. Experienced lawyer Koen Roordink has been assisting his colleagues with his expertise for years. He likes the role of coach so much that he decided to exchange his shareholdership for space for his own development, as a mediator at Poelmann van den Broek.

Koen explains, "You have to stay curious and develop yourself, that way you keep growing. That is valuable for our office and for yourself as an individual. The past few years have given me new insights into what interests and motivates me. I decided to go ahead and follow a new route. And then, of course, it's fantastic that I can do that at Poelmann van den Broek."

Delving into the client's interests

Now that he is stepping down as a partner, Koen can devote the freed-up hours to his training as a mediator, coaching colleagues and the Poelmann van den Broek Academy. Koen: "The great thing is that mediation is an extension of our firm's philosophy: we fight for the best solution for our clients. That's why we immerse ourselves in their interests and those of the other party, in order to arrive at a supported solution. That is always better in the long run than an enforced solution."

Mediation is broadening services

Whereas a lawyer focuses mainly on the conflict, a mediator looks much more at the underlying problem. Koen: "I see mediation as a broadening of our firm's services. I will continue to apply my expertise as a lawyer to the Construction service area, so I will remain a point of contact for my clients. Due to the Corona crisis, taking the mediation course has been delayed but there has been time to conduct webinars on the impact of the Corona virus on Construction and create a podcast on the temporary PFAS enforcement framework. Also, the first courses are already being planned, with clients through the PvdB Academy and with the Institute for Construction Law where I am also a lecturer."

Direct colleague from the Construction team, Stefan Kloots, became a partner on January 1. "In this way, with my decision I am giving space to colleagues to realize their ambitions," said Koen.
