Just before Christmas, we bid farewell to our interns Evert-Jan de Koning and Joyce ten Brinke. These interns are both following the Master in Civil Law at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, but each chose their own path within our office-wide student internship.
At Poelmann van den Broek, interns can choose which service areas they want to gain experience within. Evert-Jan deliberately chose to take a semester off to do an internship and set his sights on the service area of entrepreneurship. "I found insolvency law very interesting, especially receivership is a profession in its own right. The receiver is appointed by the court and is responsible for liquidating estates. I really saw how creditors are looked after and decided to include insolvency law in my package next year."
During her Master Class in Civil Law, Joyce was already introduced to Poelmann van den Broek, so she knew what we have to offer. "This internship came at exactly the right time. I wanted to start working on my thesis, but lacked some inspiration. I am particularly interested in tenancy law and labor law and knew that Poelmann van den Broek has both areas of expertise in-house. That's the advantage of the firm-wide internship. I was able to immerse myself in employment law, tenancy law and other areas of law. In addition, I was able to improve my writing skills. I can say with "justice" that I learned a lot in a short period of time and also gained inspiration for my thesis."
Both agree; there is a pleasant and open culture. "There are many young people working at Poelmann van den Broek, who invite you to everything. For example, I was allowed to participate in activities of the Young Bar Association, the Friday afternoon drinks and a lunch with the team outside," says Evert-Jan. Joyce adds: "In addition, you also get involved in everything while working. You get to come along to hearings and meetings. That way you can experience how things work in practice."
Both Joyce and Evert-Jan indicate that focus is the key word for a successful internship. Joyce: "I had to do another exam during my internship, I found that quite a challenge. In addition, I would advise you to just be yourself and stay close to yourself. Only then can you experience whether the work and/or the office really suits you. Evert-Jan: "It is good if you know in advance which area of law you want to focus on. You can choose within the office-wide internship yourself, so that way you get the best out of the internship weeks."
