Marlon Appels, a student at Radboud University, recently completed his internship at Poelmann van den Broek. With a double major in Law & Management, you're in the books a lot, so taking a look at practice was an obvious choice for Marlon. A coffee and getting to know one of our colleagues made him decide to apply for a student internship.

During his eight-week internship, he worked on several challenging corporate law cases. Under the guidance of Niels van den Bogaard and Layla Verhagen Marlon participated in the team Company & Enterprise and Commercial Contracts. In this article, he talks about his first experiences in the legal profession.

Coffee & introductions

Marlon explains that he learned about Poelmann van den Broek through a fellow student. A coffee and meeting with one of our colleagues made him decide to apply for a student internship. "The fact that Poelmann van den Broek focuses on assisting business owners was decisive for me. I discovered during my studies that I don't want to assist individuals, but organizations and companies. Exactly what you do".

Quickly in place

During his internship, Marlon found that the atmosphere in the office was approachable and relaxed. "I quickly felt at home and really became part of the team. I could also immediately participate in all the other activities the office organizes, such as trainings, meetings and get-togethers. As a result, you get to know everyone quickly and outside of work".

Attention and time

The supervision during his internship was top notch, according to Marlon: "My internship supervisors and other attorneys and colleagues took all the time they needed to include me in their ongoing cases. I often received useful feedback on pieces I had submitted, which helped me know what to look out for the next assignment. I learned a lot about certain practices because of this. These are practical things that you don't learn from books."

Create your own luck

Although the teams he interned with did not allow Marlon to attend a court hearing, he knocked on the door of a lawyer from another team and was able to experience a hearing up close. "This gave me a very complete picture of attorney work at Poelmann van den Broek," he said.

Confirmation of his passion

For Marlon, this internship was confirmation that he would like to enter the legal profession after graduation, particularly within corporate law. "The dynamics of the profession and the field of law appeal to me, because you really have to peak at the moments that matter. This suits me well as a person and it keeps you on your toes!"

"I learned a lot during my internship and got a complete picture of the legal profession. After graduation, I would like to continue in corporate law, which is where my passion lies."
