'Sharp is also how you handle your energy and talent'

Modified May 15, 2024

'What sets us apart is that we give practical advice,' says Erik. 'And you have to dare to do that, as a lawyer. It's great to see how younger colleagues respond to that. That means you know the theory so well that you feel comfortable telling a client in your own words what's smart to do. I can be proud of that.

Erik has now been with Poelmann van den Broek for 18 years, which probably makes him an impressive presence as a partner to the younger guard. But there is no question of a hierarchical distance. 'Just recently a graduate student said to me: 'Hey Erik, do you have a moment, I want to spar with you about my thesis.' I only feel my age here when I am assigned to the 'boomer apartment' during the ski trip," he adds dryly. 'That's a good example of the informal atmosphere, though.'

How to deal with your energy and your talent
Staying sharp is a good work-life balance, according to Erik. Erik: "Legal quality, that sharpness, that goes without saying. The Poelmann van den Broek sharpness, as far as working here is concerned, that's how you handle your energy and your talent. So that you can perform optimally at work and also be a pleasant person at home. Having fun in your work is very important for that.' To balance energy himself, Erik works four days. 'A four-day work week is not unusual here anyway. Times change and as a partner I don't hesitate to make choices. That's how I'm at my
best.'
