Six weeks. That seems short, yet Sophie Melssen has seen and done a lot in this time frame. Indeed, during her master's degree in Dutch law at Radboud University in Nijmegen, she did an internship at Poelmann van den Broek. Friday, August 11, 2017 is her last day.

Known name

Sophie already knew the name of our firm: "Poelmann van den Broek is of course one of the larger law firms in Nijmegen, so I certainly knew the name. It is known as a highly specialized firm where people work seriously and hard, but where the atmosphere is also important. For example, even before my internship started, I was invited to the office party. I felt very welcome and was able to get to know everyone in an informal way."

Appointments and sessions

Sophie's internship supervisors work in the Entrepreneurship team, so she often went with them to appointments in this area. But it certainly didn't stop there, she says: "attorneys from other departments are also very involved, so I went with them to appointments and hearings as well. That was great fun, because that way you get to deal with many different areas of law. Every week I attended the team meeting, which included new cases and case law. This keeps everyone up to date."

Good picture of the legal profession

One of the most enjoyable parts of her internship was going along to hearings and contributing to their preparation: "It's really nice when a lawyer discusses an issue I picked out in a pleading. Then you feel a bit proud that you contributed to this. I quickly got the feeling that I was really involved in everything anyway. attorneys from different teams knew where to find me from the beginning. They asked me to find out certain things for cases they were working on. At Poelmann van den Broek I got a good picture of the legal profession and working in it. Here you are involved in everything and they take you seriously."

Two masters

Sophie is doing the masters in Business Law and Civil Law. In which of the two she wants to graduate, or whether she will write a thesis for both, she does not know yet. But that she wants to work as a lawyer soon, that has been confirmed in recent weeks.
