An inside look at Mirthe's internship at Poelmann van den Broek

Mirthe, a student at Tilburg University, is pursuing the Master's degree in Corporate Law and recently completed her internship at Poelmann van den Broek. She began her internship with four weeks at the Company & Enterprise section under the supervision of Layla Verhagen, followed by four weeks at Bankruptcy, Restructuring, Financing and Securities under the supervision of Reinier Pijls. Coincidentally, an acquaintance of hers works for a client of the firm. After positive stories, she was eager to experience this for herself. Curious to learn more about Myrthe's internship? First impression

"A modern firm that deviates from the 'stereotypical' picture of a law firm"

Myrthe's first impression of the office was very positive. Her first internship day happened to coincide with the opening day of the Amsterdam office, so it was an instant celebration. Her idea of Poelmann van den Broek as a medium-sized firm with a relaxed working atmosphere was quickly confirmed. She experienced the office atmosphere as informal but also professional, which she believes is an ideal combination. She describes Poelmann van den Broek as a modern office that differs from the "stereotypical" picture. "Some hierarchy is present, but that far from gets in the way of dealing with colleagues," says Mirthe.

Is this my future?

The purpose of her internship was to discover if the legal profession could be a career path for her after her master's degree. She wanted to apply her theoretical knowledge in practice and learn more about how legal cases are handled in real life. She therefore liked the fact that the teams immediately got her well involved in cases. Among other things, she wrote a draft creditors' agreement, a draft summons letter, was allowed to be present at many client meetings and wrote blogs for our website. She found the bankruptcy cases particularly interesting.

Growth professionally and personally

She realized that - despite prior legal knowledge - there is still plenty to learn in practice and found out that this can still occur even if you have been working in a particular area of law for a long time. After all, you never stop learning! Furthermore, she realized that the internship also gave her a lot of self-confidence above all else. She learned to be more assertive, ask questions faster and work more efficiently. Looking back on her internship, she concludes that she finds the legal profession a very good fit for herself. So... to be continued!
