Educational institutions also need to work on making their organizations "privacy-proof". Therefore, the PO-Raad, the VO-raad and Kennisnet have joined forces and published a guide for appointing a data protection officer (hereinafter: FG) in education.

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (AVG), school boards must have appointed an FG by May 25, 2018. This FG must oversee compliance with the AVG and ensure the privacy of students, employees and third parties. In the guide explains why the appointment of an FG is mandatory for school boards. It also provides guidance on how to appoint an FG and explains the responsibilities of the FG. If a school board does not want to appoint an FG, because it believes it is not obliged to do so under the AVG, the school board must motivate this decision in writing.
